Flying to the United States is a massive stress. It can make you paranoid and nervous and only in the air does Uncle Sam place emphasis on safety before customer service.
This stress is a sort of pragmatic paranoia. There is a new order of nonsense that emerges just with the thought of giving your fingerprint or being asked if you have any weapons, drugs or hormone free European beef. For some ridiculous reason, and surely one or many that we cannot just blame on George Bush, we all arrived separately in Miami via Philadelphia, New York, Dallas, Detroit, and Chicago.
One of us needed a special visa even to board the plane. This cost him letters and meetings and the threat of a conversation the US embassy warned might make him uncomfortable. Lucky for him, he wasn't the one of us who got a special SSSS marked on his boarding pass (twice … and highlighted … anybody know what that means?) and was taken to a special room for an intimate chat with US customs officers. Which is strange considering that guy wasn't one of the four of us carrying artwork or magazines or other items that can be considered contraband at customs or sent with the dogs in oversized luggage. Nor were any of these four the one who got stuck in Philadelphia for the night after two hours delay to her flight, which might have been more pleasant than the 7 hour layover one of them had in Altanta though Atlanta had worse memories for another one of us, whose friend had been sent straight back to the UK and told he was lucky not to spend a weekend in prison for filling out the wrong form on the customs declaration the last time they had a layover in the peach state.
