SCOPE-ART MIAMI 2007 | THE BLUE DOT II
Text by: Harlan Levey | ModartPictures by: RUDEIONE | rudione.com
It is easy to understand the general European view on the US when you are about to enter the country. But once you do get in, it isn't just the cheeseburgers that get the saliva flowing. Once you're in, you realize you got know idea what the United States actually is and you recognize that whatever it is has become a part of where you come from. You piece it together by recognizing the truth to the clichés. The cars are bigger, so are the portions of food and even the width of the toilet paper. The police are more active. Bargains are more abundant than cobblestones. Lots of things are happening and not many of them seem to make sense. This makes us all excited. Enthusiasm may be a sign of stupidity, but its also contagious. It breaks, for better or worse and surely neither, with the strength of European grey.
In the United States everything is possible. All hail the blue dot. The blue dot is not the blue of old Uncle Sam. It has nothing to do with Nina Simone or Elvis. You cannot find it on every corner. It is hope for sale.
Read about it here. Tell your friends. In the next blog we might talk about the art fair. Maybe by the end of the week we'll have an opinion on why Damion Hirst's diamond crust skull or Terry Richardson's vamped up car or any of this shite might one day have the impact of a single energized blue dot.
In Miami, short skirts are in. The question of an official language is irrelevant. The sun sets with a soft gold glare. The state flag is still dancing in neon and tugging a bottle of kitch. Everything is on the rocks.
